Sweet Mia - Charlotte

My good friend, John, at Don't Unplug Your Hub, has found himself a new friend named Mia. Mia has quite a personality! But this picture he posted on Facebook, and which I have shamelessly stolen for my use, shows her in a pensive pose.

Mia the German Shepherd

It immediately made me think of the German Shepherd we once had, named Charlotte. She also liked to stare out the window, and that John has the same curtains I had in my living room, making the time-warp even more strange!

Here's the next piece of the story. In January of 1975, I set a goal of writing one poem every day of that month. (This was before we had a baby to care for. Read... I had some free time.)

I sketched Charlotte, and wrote a poem about her.

Sweet Charlotte

Sweet Charlotte, what do you see?
When you look out the window
Are you only catching slow flies,
Or do you dream of worlds that are free?

German Shepherd

Wow, that was 39 years and 3 days, and 5 dogs ago.

  1. And you have not gotten the answer after 39 years.

    I assumed.

  2. Nicely done! Now I, too, am wondering just what Charlotte was seeing.

  3. Aw, what a nice memory. :)

That is a beautiful dog. You don't see a lot of German Shepards anymore. Remember when collies, German Shepards, Irish Setters and poodles were everywhere?

  4. Nice sketch--poem too. What are they looking for?

  5. I think Mia might be too young to be pensive. Acting without thought is more her thing. What had her attention in that photo were the birds on the birdtable.

  6. Stew- there sure are lots of them!

vanilla- I suppose it's because Shepherds look so intelligent, we think they must be pondering something of worth.

Lin- when I was a kid it seemed like everyone had a Cocker Spaniel

    Chuck- dinner?

John- well, birds can be fascinating! You've got yourself a nice companion.

  7. Nice sketch and poem. I've tried on more than once occasion to figure out what Duke sees out the window. I see nothing out of the ordinary but he obviously spots something

  8. What a beautiful dog....John's and your dog of old...that inspired poetic verse and your sketch. Isn't is something how important pets are in our lives?
