The theme for the flower show this year was Hawaii, as I've mentioned. It seemed to me that there were a lot of Hawaiian plants, but not much that gave one a feel for what Hawaii was like, with the plants in a natural setting.
I've never been there, so I could be quite wrong, but I've tried to choose some pictures today that are somewhat natural looking. The first is from the "front porch" competition. I always really like these areas; people seem to do such different things with them. This one took the blue ribbon- they filled the space with Hawaiian plants.

This is a walkway- as if a pergola has been built through a rocky area. It was very inviting, although we weren't really allowed to walk under it.

Next is a deck, which was also a competition. This one seemed to me to have more of an Hawaiian feel to it.

This was the most natural-looking area, in my opinion. It was fairly large, with bare rocks and grasses and these bromeliads. I'm just showing a small section to try to cut out the number of people you can see.

This one might not be perfectly natural, but I imagine it might be what a nice garden planting could look like. The plants are bromeliads and croton.

Flower shows tend to create flashy displays of plants that wouldn't naturally appear or bloom together, and that's what more of the themed exhibits were like. I'm not complaining; they were spectacular. We'll start visiting some of those tomorrow.

very similar to my plants back home in the Philippines, and I am missing them looking at your photos
ReplyDeleteWhat a tropical look.
ReplyDeleteI really like that first picture a lot. It looks like a placer I'd like to walk up inside.
ReplyDeleteVery nice and familiar. Lots of those plants over here, but the difference is in the Hawaiian vibe, I guess. You can sense it. :)
ReplyDeleteI think the first one is very inviting.
ReplyDeletebetchai- I wasn't sure where your "home" was, but I imagine Hawaii and the Philippines have very similar plants.
ReplyDeleterainfield- that's what they were trying for, so I guess they succeeded! But you get the real thing, every day
Ratty- yes, it's "cruel" that they make such inviting spaces, but they are all "fake" and we can't walk into them
Ivy- We do seem to think FLOWERS with Hawaii, and maybe just plants with the Philippines. Probably one of our many misconceptions.
Ann- it was far and away the most inviting front porch.
