Here's the new (to me) plant I learned on the recent Ohio hike. Just sharing it quickly and going to bed. Didn't get a restful weekend and the work week starts again in the morning.
It's Chrysogonum virginianum, known as Goldenstar or Golden Knee. I guess it's used as a groundcover in gardens (a bit south of me), but it is a native plant. We found it running wild in the woods.
It's a member of the Asteraceae or Compositae family. That means the "real" flower is in the center cluster and the yellow things that we would think of as petals are called rays.
It's a really hairy plant, and the flowers grow from the axils (joints). The Latin chrysos means gold and gonu (-gonum in the name) means joint. Thus the common name of Golden Knee.
There are more flowering plants in Asteraceae than any other, so it's in good company.
