Firsts - Day 96

Another warm day, although with clouds and a breeze it was more comfortable for walking. The warm weather has brought out the first Peepers we've heard. Last night was the first night we slept with the heater completely off, and yesterday afternoon we fastened the trailer door open to get fresh air inside for the first time.

Today on the trail, I saw the first wildflower of this year. OK, it was small and there was just one blossom, but spring has to start somewhere! It's a Bluet, also known as Quaker Lady. bluet

It was the day of the first tick of the season. Hmmm. A deer tick crawling over my hand- no embedding, but it means we have to start paying attention. This one is getting to spend the rest of its restricted life in a ziploc bag. I wonder how much air a tick requires. It will spend the rest of its life sadly wandering around the inside of the bag looking for a blood meal, to no avail. deer tick on a hand

We saw the first turtle of the year, a little Midwest Painted Turtle. It was also the first turtle rescue of the year, since I moved it from the road to the grass. midwest painted turtle

We had a few trail miles at Salt Fork State Park and Wildlife Area. hiker on a wide trail

Tomorrow is a day off. It's going to be another rain day. My legs are ready for a rest, and I have a list of tasks to keep me busy.

Miles today: 17.0. Total miles so far: 1240.9

  1. Peepers! And a flower and a turtle - how wonderful. But a deer tick already? Ug. Glad you enjoyed all those signs of spring, Joan. April

  3. Hi April- the spring teasers felt really nice.

Ann- everyone seems to agree on "except for the tick."
