Green Lakes State Park

I was pretty sure I had blogged about this before, but I can't find it. This is Green Lakes State Park near Syracuse, NY. Yes, the water really looks that green.
Green Lake

There are two lakes here, Green Lake and Round Lake. They are meromictic lakes. That means that the water never "turns over" with the seasons. The warm water constantly stays on top and the cold water at the bottom. The lakes are glacial, 195 feet and 180 feet deep, respectively, although each is only about 1/4 mile across. There are only about 50 meromictic lakes in the entire world.

Larry, Pam, Marie and I hiked around both lakes this morning. I've hiked here with them at least two other times, so I can't figure out why it's not on the blog somewhere. Anyway, the trail is very nice and shaded. It's also really close to their house, so it's their standard go-to hike for a quick walk.

The lower levels of the water have high concentrations of minerals and cyanobacteria. Much to my astonishment this results in the creation of a living reef. I didn't even know freshwater could build reefs. (other than artificial ones to aid in creating fish habitat) Apparently, they can grow because the bacteria precipitates the calcium. The muddy looking area at the front of this picture is the reef, just below the water surface.

Reflections and shadows were amazing colors.

Disclaimer- Larry took some of these pictures, and I took some.

Here's a selfie from yesterday with Larry, Marie, me and Steve.

We've now moved the party to Marie's house. One little extra short hike at an NCT crossing, just to say we've been on the NCT in New York together this year.
