Oh yes, and I cleaned six kitchens today. Tomorrow... kayaking with Ellen! Now... bedtime.

Disappointed with Bluebirds?

 
What? How could I ever be disappointed with my lovely little bluebirds? I snapped this picture this morning while Maggie and I were walking.



However, this afternoon I was in a hurry and just blasted out the door without my camera... it was just another walk around my little loop out back, right?

Sigh. There were three sandhill cranes resting in the shade of the trees by the railroad tracks, and I got within 20 feet of them. Only the second time I've seen the cranes actually make a stop right here.

Wildlife of the Day

 
More work assignments, and a nice assortment of common, but fun wildlife.

Here's a squirrel outside someone's house. He certainly looks like he has no stress over where dinner will come from.



In the same yard, a chipmunk so nonchalant he felt relaxed enough to take this uncharacteristic pose. Hardly gave me a thought... just glanced over his shoulder.



Can't ignore the amphibious buddies. Here's a smallish green frog. Probably this year's tadpole.



How about some more flutter-bys? Here's a head-on view of a very much alive little wood satyr that I just introduced a couple of days ago.



And finally, a common buckeye. It was enjoying the damp mud near the green frogs.



Doing reports on the assignments tonight. Not nearly as much fun as being outside, but I can't complain about a nice collection of critters for the day!

Little Wood Satyr

 
I spent most of the evening fooling around on Facebook looking at photos from an old bike trip that a friend posted, and trying to ID the riders. So, the blog gets short shrift. Just a dead butterfly.

This is the Little Wood Satyr. It's the most common dark butterfly of late spring and mid-summer. It can be seen everywhere east of the Mississippi in the US.

There are a number of other Satyrs, but they have different spots and some have extremely limited ranges. All others are lighter colored.



Sorry it's dead, but it's a very nervous flier, and I probably wouldn't have a picture if I hadn't found it this way.
