Early Morning Magic

 
Just a bit of magic from this morning. Not too tricky, really. Think about it.


I spent the morning with a friend, and the rest of the day was quiet. Very nice.

How Do the Newspapers Move?

 
Next installment in how the papers get stuffed.

I've told you that the papers begin at one end of the line, and showed you how they are opened. Today, I'll show you how they move along the tray.

See the post behind the shopping section? When I say "behind," that's because the papers move away from the camera. If you look in the groove where the post is you can see a drive chain. The post simply pushes the paper along.



You might recall that there are stations along the line where the inserts fall into the outer paper. There is some sort of timing mechanism that makes that happen at the right intervals. You might be wondering how fast it moves. Fast. We stuff about 12,000 papers every Friday. That first day, the machine was not working well at all and we worked 11.5 hours. Today, it did the best I've seen it. (I've only been there four weeks). We were done at 3:30.

Here's how it goes.



It's not strenuous work, but tiring in its own way. No complaints, though. It's a job for money.

Snow on Big Sauble Headwaters

 
Although I took these pictures yesterday, they are perfect for today. Yesterday morning was sunny, but just before noon snow started falling steadily, and that has been the case ever since. Off and on, at least.

These pictures are taken in a swampy area that is generally the headwaters of the Big Sable River, the one that empties into Lake Michigan at Ludington State Park. I just like the way they look, and that's good enough for a quality day.



This picture has not been reduced to black and white, but it's hard to tell, isn't it? You can see a bit of green and brown on the right edge.


This area, thick with watercress floating on the water, and cedars, seems to defiantly remaining green despite the winter white.

Sunshine on Ice

 
I kind of like the title... it sounds like you can preserve the sunshine like fish or fresh cream. That said, the pictures are disappointing. The reality glowed and sparkled and shimmered.

You'll have to settle for what the camera managed to capture.



East of us, the ice hasn't ever melted off the trees since the weekend (or the roads- loving the new tires!)



You can almost see the sparkles on this one. I wonder if a video would have caught the sparkling.



This is my favorite picture, even though it wasn't the best real life scene.

Ground Patterns

 
Today was a work day that ended with a ruined tire, and the need to acknowledge the truth that I need new tires. They will go on tomorrow, and for penance I have to leave at 7:30 to get to the tire place.

However, I loved some of the patterns the frozen ground and dusting of snow made.





And tomorrow, I will love having new tires. One of these has been noisy since I bought it. Seriously noisy. I will be really glad to have that gone. And driving all these icy back roads will be better.
