Mid-Winter Garden Report

 You may remember that I brought two plants inside for the winter. Actually it's three. I'll explain.

This is Sedum linare 'Sea Urchin.' It turns very white/pink when outside in the summer and fills spaces very nicely. It's doing OK. I don't think it's a problem that that taller stalks have died back. The new growth looks healthy enough. And I'll be able to put it in three places this year.

The other one I brought in is Sedum mexicanum 'Lemon Coral.' From the sad little puddle I bought for $2 last spring I have 3 nice pots. It's gotten pretty leggy, but I'll give it a haircut when I put it out come spring.

I guess I've never showed you this plant. Probably because it didn't do what I wanted. It's not hardy, but I knew that when I bought it. I thought I'd put in out in a pot each year for interest, because it is a very interesting plant. It's Fishbone Cactus, Cryptocereus anthonyanus.

However, It really doesn't handle any kind of weather very well, and it's mostly just scarred and unhappy. And it gets sort of hidden by the other plants. I'm not sure if I'll put it outside this year.

This is what it should look like. This picture was taken of one at the Flower Show a few years ago.



And now, for the news on my Aloe squarossa. It broke off at the root. Not sure why. Here's what it looked like when it was healthy.



But I planted a bunch of the stalks today, so it should come back just fine.

Anyone who would like to have a couple of stalks, let me know. You can have them now and sprout your own, or I can plant some in cups for you to get later.

I worked on stuff all day long. Nothing heavy, but I did 3 hours of screen time, some other things, and I didn't have to take any naps.

Five ibuprofen a day- can't seem to cut down to four, and I'm still sleeping with an ice pack on my face, but the bones in my face aren't nearly as sore.

Philadelphia Flower Show - Spiral Cactus

  I'm way too tired to do a long post tonight. Have a very cool spiral cactus, Cereus repandus "sprialis."

I posted one picture of the Expo on Facebook. You don't need much else unless the authors get together for a photo. It's another vendor show, rght? Today was very slow. We all need it to be better tomorrow. I'm staying with friend, but we are all way too tired for pictures tonight.

Meijer Gardens - Miscellaneous

 
Just a few more things I have nice pictures of from Meijer Gardens. Actually, I have more pictures, but I have to tell you the plants were short on labels and I'm only willing to share a small number of things with no names. Since I don't know much about tropical orchids, and don't care very much either, I'll just say this is a yellow one. There was a temporary display in the conservatory but no labels.



Also in the conservatory were a number of tropical birds. This was the only one I saw. It's a Bishop Weaver from Africa.



They are supposedly developing a moss garden. Now that interests me. But we couldn't see that there were many kinds of moss. However, there was this patch of liverwort. I don't know what kind, but I think it's different from any I've seen before.



Also outside were several of these trees. They have to be a willow with those buds that will open to catkins, but I don't know what kind has bright red buds.



The annual planters were nicely done and still looking good in November. Chrysanthemums and ornamental kale.



And, this cactus, Argentine Giant, Echinopsis candicans, looks like sort of a prickly octopus. I like it! From looking at other pictures, I'd guess this is a pretty large specimen.



Supposed to rain and snow tomorrow. We'll see what I can find to feature.

In other news: I was tired from the weekend. Managed to work a little bit on sorting pictures, and started to clean up the house a bit before Thanksgiving. Steve is coming home again this year!
