After the Storm

It was so still and beautiful today, after the winds of yesterday, that I just had to go out. I confess that I only did about a half-hour snowshoe walk, but even so, it was awesome.

The report from the deck is that all the critters are fine. Riley was racing around early, and the birds followed. This little junco is not frozen in place, but seems solidly settled.

The Cemetery Creek is frozen. No surprise there, but the scattered fluffy snow on the surface is interesting.

Finally, just two interesting patterns of light and dark.

We had pancakes for lunch... a perfect meal on a cold day.

At the Bird Feeder

The best things to happen today happened at the bird feeder. Now we are having a real storm. The squirrel seems to have hunkered down, and the birdies sure took advantage of it.

The little junco seems to be asking the cardinal if he can share.

The answer is, YES.

A downy woodpecker showed up too. And the blue jay is usually nearby. That's his tail hanging down.

One Little Junco

junco

Just a little junco. Not unusual at all, except perhaps its behavior. It was totally unconcerned about how close we were. It was hopping along beside the trail, and we walked within six feet of it before it fluttered a bit farther away.

We should be home tomorrow, so perhaps I'll have a live post. We are doing this hike on a very tight schedule because I have to do the paper route beginning the very next morning. I'll pop in and say a quick hi, even if I can't manage a great post.
