More Manistee Lake

 
Out working today. Gorgeous weather. Blue sky and blue lake, not too hot. I was on the east side of Manistee Lake. This lake is about five miles long. Not huge, but much too big to capture in just one or two photos.

This is at the north end, taken from a public boat launch called Penny Park. The breeze was piling up those ripples. I like the way they look.



A little farther south you can get a higher vantage point from the village of Eastlake. The better pictures, like this one, are taken looking north (which is down the lake in terms of water flow) because the sun was starting to get low. At the right of this picture on the far shore is the S.S. City of Milwaukee, a lake ferry which no longer operates, but is a floating museum. You can even stay on it overnight (bed and breakfast). I need to go see it. I've never done that.

Out doing work assignments today, and that put me in a location to see Manistee Lake from a new angle. Manistee Lake is a body of water formed from the Manistee and Little Manistee Rivers. I think it's a natural lake. Which is to say, not created by a dam.

This is looking north from the southeast end where the Little Manistee Flows in.



It's really sort of an ugly duckling, because it's been so heavily used for industry. Instead, Manistee has embraced the Lake Michigan shoreline for recreation.



Nevertheless, on a sunny day, the water is blue, and there are usually some anglers out in boats. The oldest sections of Manistee are located on this lake, pretty much just beyond that factory you see. It has expanded north and west, and the city center is now along the outlet of this lake, on the Manistee River, between Manistee Lake and Lake Michigan.

I've been curious every time I've driven over the bridge where the Manistee River flows into Manistee Lake. There is what appears to be an old railroad grade, leading off into the marshy area at the head of the lake.



Yesterday I stopped long enough to be able to read the sign.



It certainly looks like foot travel is not restricted, so one of these days I may just have to see how far in toward the lake that goes. The berm continues north along the river, on the other side of the road too. My RR atlas says that was the former Manistee and North Eastern line that ran as far as Northport in the Leelanau Peninsula. Fifteen miles at the far north end are now a non-motorized trail. Of course, I wonder how far one could follow it, starting here at its southern end.

Looking south, toward the lake, the river begins to break into braided passages. You can see part of the older section of Manistee, with a church steeple, across the way.
