Mini Tour de Ludington

I did a little walking tour in Ludington today before bell choir practice. This was partly for the exercise and partly to make sure I'm getting things right for the next mystery.

I started out at Copeyon Park on Pere Marquette Lake. The picture is a little blown out, but I had to shoot right at the sun, with it hidden behind the tree. The lake is a natural one, although the current outlet that flows past the lighthouse, is not where the lake originally emptied into Lake Michigan.

On the far shore is the Pere Marquette Memorial. This is supposedly the spot where explorer Jacques Marquette died in 1675.

You know I have to picture the carferries. This is an angle I haven't shown before, I'm pretty sure. From here, the Spartan is in the foreground, with the Badger behind. Good news on the Badger. They have the final permits to rebuild the part of the dock that failed this summer, and it's looking good for a full 2024 season. There have been cross-lake ships from Ludington to Wisconsin since the 1860s.

Do you remember this picture? Well, not this exact one. But I first photographed this scene in 2014. The trees are significantly larger now, and not as white. The first picture is better- better angle, better light. But it's become kind of an old friend.

I edited, I puttered in the trailer but need to buy yet another length of screws (I can hardly believe there is a size of screw I don't yet own), I went to bell practice. And the words in Vacation from DMS are up to 7589. For any author friends, "No, I'm not doing NaNoWriMo. I just happened to get inspired on this book in November."

A Fast 4.5

  Body wanted to walk today. One day of sitting is enough. But I'm so tired of the same road loop. I walked it backwards and expanded it to 4.5 miles. This was the best- a nice primary color winter scene.

I have walked all this before, and ridden bicycle on it, but hadn't noticed this little pond. Maybe it's not usually a pond!

Neat patterns in this small wetland with the hummocks behind the cattails.

The sky was blue to the north, but in the southwest it was very typically wintery.

The roads were mostly clear, with only a few slushy places. Going through town was the worst with icy or unshoveled sidewalks. Still, I averaged 17.1 minutes a mile. I know hikes aren't races, but sometimes the road walks are just a way to get exercise, and upping the speed increases the endurance.

In other news: I did some editing, and switched to non-Christmas accordion pieces to practice. Still pretty much in relaxation mode.

Red, White and Blue (and a freebie)

 
I've been trying to get this picture for almost two years now. It was definitely two winters ago that I realized the potential for a nice shot. First I didn't have my camera, then I didn't have time. Then the sky wasn't blue. Then the sun was in the wrong place. Then it was summer and I learned that you don't get the same effect at all when the leaves are on the trees. And around and around it went with the necessary elements not all coming together. Then today, I was in town, with time, with the camera, with the leaves down, with the sun to the west, with the sky blue...



The white birch are planted beside a factory building. Who knew it would make such a great picture?

And here's the freebie, a long shot looking toward Ludington from the south end of town. The tower on the left is the courthouse, and the church is Emmanuel Lutheran. There isn't anywhere I've found (from the ground) to get a good shot of the city, but this shows a little bit.
