Today I'll show you pictures from one of the major commercial exhibitors, called "Journey to Spring," by From Blossoms, a Philadelphia florist. It is supposed to be a fantastical journey to spring as the flowers "light up" with ultraviolet colors as the bees and bugs see them. And the "bugs" are fairly fantastical as well.
The flowers were OK, but the best parts were the "bugs." Marie says they reminded her of Where the Wild Things Are.
And more-
But my favorite was the green guy in white sneakers.
Maybe I shouldn't start with showing you one of the crazier exhibits, although there were a disproportionate number of odd ones this year- I think because of the "electric" theme. But just stick around, there were plenty of more typical displays.
For today's new fact I choose to remember the Shawangunk Ridge which is part of the Appalachian Mountains. We followed it home from Philadelphia. The name may be a Dutch transcription of a Lenape (native American) phrase that means something like "in the smoky air." That may or may not have been what the Lenape actually named it, or it may only refer to the appearance of a fort that was burned in 1663.
In any case, locally they are often simply called The Gunks. Americans can be counted upon to reduce almost anything to one syllable.
However... CORRECTION... this picture is not the Shawangunks. This is Overlook Mountain in the Catskills. You can see the Gunks at Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge.
