Oaks won't get in on the flashy color show. They are much more subtle and rich. They wait until the rest of the trees are pretty much done showing off, and then they bring on some rich tones.
Today, the sky was gray, the air was cooler and it eventually started to rain. It seems like the leaves have browned overnight and the rain will start to bring them down. Now it's the oak's turn. The first one is a white oak, with blunt lobes.
The other three are red oak, with pointed lobes
I'm working hard on paperwork for my job. Gotta scoot!

OK then, see ya! Don't work too hard.
When we lived in Connecticut, the oaks in our front yard held onto their leaves all winter. Only in the spring, as new buds emerged did the old leaves fall from the branches.
we mostly have oaks and pines here, so our colors are very much subdued, and pines are evergreen. we do have some trees that change into brighter colors but not a lot as there. have a good weekend.
there is a lot to be said for subtle and rich.

Chuck- that's interesting. I've seen some do that, but not most of them here.
betchai- I like both tones, but I would miss the bright phase.
Ann- The richness is one of my favorite phases. On sunny days they just glow.
It's nice to have something for everyone - the rich tones for those who love them, the bright showy colors for others...nature knows how to please, doesn't she!
