Heuchera Health

I'm trying the next possible way to get Facebook to pull through a picture. This suggestion says to put a picture before any text. Let's see if this works.

Today's post is going to be a report on all my various Heuchera. It will be long, because I now have quite a nice collection! The picture above is one of the new ones this year called 'Smoke and Mirrors.' It looks really good.

On the other hand, I think, with no regrets, I'm going to give up on the very first one I bought about 30 years ago. It's the very common 'Purple Palace.' One year it got about twice this big, but it just never was able to thrive. Who knows why? I have a very pretty Heucheralla picked out to put in the space, but I need to not buy any more plants for a while. At least any that cost more than a couple of bucks.

This is another common one, 'Caramel.' Because it's common, I thought I didn't want one, but I decided it would look really good in this spot, and I was right.

In general, I've tried not to have any duplicates, but I did split the 'Caramel.' The piece was quite small, but I think it's going to live. I know it doesn't look great, but it is alive.

The other one I have several of is 'Firefly.' I love the bright green of the leaves and the flowers are actually showy enough to enjoy. You can see one of the late ones still in this picture taken today.

'Midnight Rose' has darkened. The pink spots don't show up as well as earlier in the season, but I suspect that this is normal. It also looks good except for a few leaves that got a bit too much sun. I kept them out of the picture.

This one is'Seasons King.'

Which contrasts nicely with 'Carnival Cinnamon Stick.'

Here's the first one I bought other than the ill-fated 'Purple Palace.' This is 'Cathedral Windows.' It almost died from the days when the animals browsed through the gardens at will. They killed quite a few nice plants. But this came back.

When I put in 'Caramel,' I moved 'Peach Flambe' to a new location. It's not really happy there and has gotten smaller. I'll need to watch it. The light is too dappled for a good picture, but I like the color a lot. It was the first one I bought in 2023 when I started trying to spiff up this garden bed.

Another that I bought, maybe later the same year was 'Electric Plum.' It is also brighter earlier in the season. But it, too, has gotten smaller, and it's one of my favorites, so I'll need to watch it. When the light shines through the leaves they really do seem electric.

Also purchased in 2023 was 'Dark Knight,' which is naturally smaller, but I really like the shape of the leaves.

I think there's just one other, which is 'Amber Lady.' It stays fairly red all season.

So how many different ones is this? Not counting 'Purple Palace,' it's eleven different ones. Of course, I have picked out a couple others I want. Eventually... not right away!

I said today was going to be a rest day, and I enforced that except for truly minimal putzing in the gardens. Mostly I read books. Tomorrow I need to get back in gear.

The Case of the Attempted Coleus 2026

Today I trimmed all the faded flowers off the Seven Sisters Rose which allowed the attempted Coleus to be more visible. I think the results are the best I've managed yet, but not spectacular. The Coleus are planted among the remains of the Violet and Sweedish Ivy leaves. I trimmed some of those back so they aren't obstructing the view either.

Basically, I have 4 different ones. The solid bright one is 'Inferno' that I bought this year. There are 3 dark ones (only one is very visible) and those are 'Black Dragon.' Of the other two, one has yellow edges and a maroon center, and the other is mottled green.

This view catches all four, although the dark ones are small.

How do I feel about this? Meh. I think I learned things about keeping them over the winter and can probably do a better job of having them a bigger size to plant in the spring. I'd need a ton more to really fill in that area. And I'd need to remove the violets- probably an ok idea, and cut the daffodil stems down early- not such a good idea. Plus, I really think I'm going to dig up this whole section this fall to divide the dafs and add the alliums. Also, this area honestly gets a bit too much afternoon sun for the Coleus.

However, I could do a planter for the porch, or put them in the deep shade on the other side of the birch tree. I really do like them.

I decided I needed a bit of a rest today. I puttered around- did a little editing, a little gardening, finished writing one of my columns, but I didn't work very hard.

Tomorrow I have to get ready for my first big vendor show of the summer (yeah, I haven't done as many this year), so I have to stick to a work list and a schedule. Then Saturday, it's off to Arcadia Daze!

Miscellaneous Blossoms

A few things have been blooming, but most not spectactularly. Still, they make me happy.

The first one is in this post only because it wasn't blooming the other day. This is the other of my day lilies, called 'Young Love.' I'm hoping there will be a day when the all bloom together and I can get a pic of that.

Here is the Sedum 'Atlantis' that I like so much. But this is the first time it's bloomed for me.

Also just starting to bloom is this rosette of the Sempervivum 'Black.' They all look pretty much alike when they flower.

Betsy gave me a small Dahlia. I missed getting a picture of the first flower, but it has another. I have no idea which Dahlia it is. And you have to take them in for the winter. We'll see if that happens.

Here's the best of all although it didn't succeed at looking very good. That white oriental poppy I bought was determined to flower, even if late. It made a bud, but then it was trying to open those days when the air quality was so terrible. I don't know if that affected it, but this was the best it managed. Still- I can't wait till next year!

Then it quickly dropped all the petals. But I think it's interesting that the seed pod is not black like the other colors, but reddish.

I managed to get a lot done today- editing, watered the gardens, mowing, some gardening, a long phone call, and then I walked 4.5 miles on roads. OF course, since I watered there was a pop-up rainstorm! Quite windy right now.

Front Garden Report 2026- #3

The Front Garden is turning out so amazing! I have a lot to share.

First is the general view of the west side. This never fails to make me smile.

And of one part of the east side. I had to take a picture of either the part in sun or shade this afternoon. The shaded part only has greenery right now since the blue Globe Bellflowers finished blooming, so here is the part that has afternoon sun.

There is quite a lot to talk about right now. Let's start with Astilbe. I have one pink one and three white ones. These were some of the plants that cost me 10¢ each a couple of years ago, so I can't complain. But despite being where they should be happy, I've never had much luck getting Astilbe to thrive. I'm thinking about replacing them with other things if I find something I like better. They are OK, but they should be bigger and fuller.

The pink one is 'Rheinland.'

And the white one is 'Bridal Veil.'

I have one new hosta here. Betsy gave me a multi-clump of 'Hacksaw,' which is fun with narrow scalloped leaves. (Small Halcyon behind it- I just moved several of those this spring too)

And speaking of hosta- the 'Tiny Tears' are in full bloom now. A whole lot of this bed is edged with it.

I'm still trying to get this patch of white Lamium (Deadnettle) to fill in better. As you can barely see, it has white flowers too, although I'm much more interested in the white foliage.

Finally for today, the 'Landini' lily bulbs I bought on closeout at the end of 2024 are really looking great! I thought these would be more maroon based on the pictures, instead of the almost candy-apple red. In fact, most of the pictures of it on-line are much deeper- from maroon almost to black. It's possible they aren't getting quite enough sun as they are in almost total shade. Nevertheless, I really like these.

And the flowers are huge!

I've been working sporadically at putting a broken brick edging around this garden to make it a little easier to mow around, so I don't have to do as much hand trimming. You can see the Seven Sisters Rose in this shot.

There are still things that need to be moved around, and one section is pretty much a "weed patch" of bellflower and dwarf Solomon's seal. I'll continue to work on replacing some of that with other things. Additional plans for this year are to buy one Heucherella I want, but most of my upcoming plant purchases will have to do with the Moon Garden.

Here's a news flash! I was outside just after dark last night and saw... FIREFLIES! I don't know when the last time was that I saw any here.

In other news: I edited, walked a mile on the road, did some housecleaning including getting some of the recycling ready to take to where it has to go. My special hosta came today. Stay tuned. It came bare-root, but looking very healthy. It's in a pot and should be nice and perky in a couple of days.

Humidity not too terrible, so I kept moving pretty well.

All the Colors, Not the Rainbow

Red is for the Seven Sisters Rose. This is usually varied shades of light pink with an occasional darker flower. This year all the roses are very nearly red. Since I don't like this plant much, this is at least a color I enjoy more.

For orange we have another blossom open on the 'Frosty Kiss' Gazania.

Common Mullein provides yellow. Thes are on the plant that has the fuzzy rosettes of big leaves in spring.

Green is a surprise. I just don't know what the surprise is yet. These leaves have come up in some disturbed soil. It may be one of the prickly lettuces, but it doesn't look quite right to me for that. Stay tuned.

Blue and purple don't look very different in the pictures. In real life the plants do look different. This is the Viper's Bugloss, that weed I love. I've coaxed enough of it to self-seed in the driveway beds that it's looking very nice right now. I'll share a long shot another day so you can see how much there is.

And for purple, this is a plant Betsy gave me, Moldavian Dragonhead, Dracocephalum moldavica. And there's a scientific name that's easy to remember. Draco=dragon, cephalum= head, and the moldavian. It's an annual, but perhaps it will re-seed. This one is new to me.

For white, this is one of my new Moon Garden plants. It's still in its pot because it's going in a specific place that I don't have dug up yet. This is a Guara called 'Whirling Butterflies.' It's supposed to get 3 feet tall but probably not until I get it out of that pot!

Finally, what set off this color theme in my head was the black sky at mid-day! We had a fast but heavy thunderstorm. But if there was a rainbow afterwards, I missed it.

The heat today has been the worst so far. I may have to sleep on the deck tonight. The fans have lost the battle with the interior air.

In other news, I did the morning editing and stuff, but the hateful task in the basement is nearly done. Stay tuned. Only worked outside briefly. There is a little breeze now, so I might try for a few more minutes.

1,3,5,5, and More

I showed you the yellow lily when the first blossom opened on June 19.

Then two more opened to make 3.

I forgot to get a picture of 4, but then there were 5 all at the same time.

I wondered if all 6 would open together. But the first one faded as the 6th one opened today, so only 5 at a time. Last year, it had 5 total. So this is the best year ever. Not bad for a flower that appeared in my garden and I have no idea how. Someone must have given it to me, or maybe even snuck it into the ground to surprise me.

I promised the Mason County Multi-Use Trail Committee that I'd do some scouting for a small section of potential trail route. Cathy went with me. Except for some pieces of what might be old logging roads, we saw a lot of this sort of thing. We didn't actually connect where we wanted to because there was an unexpected fence through the M-DOT property. From the other direction we gave up at a solid thicket of buckthorn and autumn olive, and possibly another fence. I might try again on a cooler day with a pair of loppers. Anyway, we bushwhacked for 1.6 miles and it took 1.5 hours. But I did collect some useful information, I think. Quite a bit of evidence of homeless encampments, although we didn't encounter anyone.

We went back to Cathy's for cold drinks and crunchy carrots. She also had a 300-piece puzzle set up. That was perfect! We easily finished it in one sitting, and I had been sort of hankering for a puzzle. It's called "Kitchen Garden." Such a fun, plant-rich picture!

In other news, I edited and did projects. Managed to get in the gardens a bit in the morning, and again late in the afternoon. This coming week is going to be a test to have time to work or do anything outside with the coming heat and humidity. But they say it may be the hottest of the summer. I won't mind being done with that.
