But the views of the lake were always through the trees which doesn't make great pictures, so I focused on other details. This fungus is nifty.
Look at the size of this tree stump! Bill's stick is over 4 feet long. He laid it on top for scale.
These are sweet gum balls. This tree doesn't really grow in Michigan. Maybe an occasional ornamental. There was one section of trail that was carpeted with these seed pods. Even though I've seen these often enough before, I'd never really had to walk on them. They are much sturdier than I thought.
This was a really interesting beaver dam. It's made almost entirely of cattails and grasses with some small sticks. There was a series of dams. And I don't know why the water is so green and milky.
Tappan Lake was very pretty with more views of the water. It also has several causeways that carry a road across the wide ends of its bays.
All of these lakes are created by dams, making them actually reservoirs. There are only 110 natural lakes in all of Ohio, and some of them have been enlarged or altered. That's an amazingly small number, considering that there are about 60 natural lakes in my home county (Mason County, MI), and about 80 in Lake County- the next county east.
Today was really difficult. The first 5.5 miles were just littered with fallen and shattered trees and some big hills. It took us 3 hours to get through that. Then there was another big hill on a road section. Fortunately the final section was clear and in good condition.
Miles today: 15.2. Total miles so far: 1284.5 -notice Day 100
