That's Spall, Folks!

Another new word! I love it. Spall = flakes of a material that are broken off a larger solid body and can be produced by a variety of mechanisms, including as a result of projectile impact, corrosion, weathering, cavitation, or excessive rolling pressure. Spall and spalling are now used by particle physicists. The neutrons that are ejected from the bombarding of a uranium target with atoms are known as spall.

Hi Nutmeg- A long time ago hubby was part of a guys coffee group. One of the regulars always had something to talk about because he had a lifetime goal to learn something new every day. I got to hear some of those items secondhand. But I was always impressed with the idea, and made it one of my "QD" elements.
