Where the Rabbit Went

For wildlife it's always about finding something to eat and somewhere to stay warm/safe. In the winter, that's really all-consuming. Yesterday, the fox was looking for a meal. His/her tracks were no where near these, or there would have been a conflict of interest.

As I stepped out the door yesterday morning, leading away from the house was this line of tracks. I could see that it was made by a bunny rabbit, and I know where it was headed, but you probably don't. I'll show you.

Under that tree is a stack of old tires which I use for my compost pile container. Any rabbit worth its salt will know that a compost pile is a great potential food source... wildlife dumpster diving.

rabbit tracks

Just as a reminder, here's the ordinary pattern of rabbit tracks, if the rabbit is just casually hopping along. The two large back feet land side by side, ahead of the staggered, smaller front feet.

Although the pattern clearly said "rabbit," not all the tracks will look like those above. This set shows where bunny was sitting up on his back feet... look at those big, spread toes... kind of like snowshoes!

Oh, you would like to know why the rabbit was walking away from my kitchen steps? That's easy...

compost bucket

... it was having breakfast from the kitchen compost bucket!

A winter is not too boring with this tracking experience.

We throw out our veggie scraps under the birdfeeder this time year for the opossum. Although I haven't seen them this winter, I do notice the snacks disappearing. I didn't know how many opossum I had until we were trapping this summer.

Why have it from the compost bin when you can have it fresh at the door :)

Obviously Mr. Bunny Rabbit didn't have all day to wait for you to carry the bucket out to the compost bin, He was hungry NOW :)

I've crisscrossed hundreds of acres of woods and fields over the last month and have only come across one set of rabbit tracks.

rainfield- winter is never boring... just cold!

Hi Russ- Thanks for coming by- you know I love to find the stories to tell

Lin- would love to see your opossum some more. They are fascinating, and prehistoric.

Carol- ha! That's a good one. Next, bunny will be thumping on the door asking to come in to dinner!

Ann- he knows where the fresh stuff is!

wiseacre- Must be one of those years when the population crashes. We've had some of those, but usually bunnies everywhere!
