It's a Long Shot

 
Today was a work day, kind of gray, a little hazy. But I like these two long views.

First is Portage Lake, near Onekama. However, this view is one I've never seen before, because it's from a hill above the southeast corner of the lake. You can see the Lake Michigan outlet in the distance. Everything is foreshortened because of the distance. Portage Lake is about three miles long. This is actually a great viewpoint, because you can see most of the lake from one place.



I've showed you this next view before, at the end of a summer. See More Vistas. However, tonight I looked up a little bit about what we are seeing. This is on 9-Mile Road, looking east from a ridge near Elm Road. The farthest ridge of light blue hills is Briar Hills. It's on the far side of the Manistee River. My Manistee National Forest map says there are two Non-Motorized Semi-Primitive Areas there. I'll have to check those out one of these days. New trails?

The next closest ridge, in a deeper blue, is on the west side of the river. The high area on the right is the general location of the high point of Manistee County. I haven't been to that one yet, but winter would be a good time to do it because it's wooded, and you probably can't see anything from it in the summer.



We are supposed to start getting snow tomorrow. We are on the line as to getting just some, or something decent. Stay tuned.
