OK, I'm home alone. No one pulls up the driveway. There is someone on the porch. I open the door, and guess who is heading for a hiding place behind the snowblower.
I rattled the tarp and made him/her scoot. Trust me, I have no interest in too close an encounter with this beastie. I think they are incredibly cute, but pulling quills out of my feet or hands with pliers does not interest me.
Yes, it was a porcupine, right on the porch. They gnaw wood, even treated wood, like crazy. I'm not too thrilled to have this friend so close. And a dropped quill might end up in my foot, by accident.

Thanks for the photo of the porcupine. I haven't seen many of them.
I'm always checking on your posts, you keep me interested in your part of the country.
I can understand your displeasure with having this beastie so close. It's fun to see your pictures of it though.
Oh WOW! That is very cool!! Not good, but cool!!
I think a porcupine on the porch trumps an opossum any day!
If Porky did not chew the rim of the bucket, who did?
My Grandpappy H warned me to never kill one out in the woods. He said that if a man were lost out there and needed food he could easily kill Porky for a meal.
well hopefully it gets the message that it's not a wanted guest
Hi DG- We have a ton of porcupines around, but I've never had one in my yard.
Ratty- well, yes, I had been hoping for a nice picture
Lin- it trumps an opossum for concern level
vanilla- Jack Frost
Chuck- but I think skinning it would be a real task!
Ann- my guess is that's unlikely.
I followed Grandpappy's advice and never had to skin one.
I have never seen a porcupine. They look cute but, like you, I wouldn't relish a quill for a souvenier.
