Best I'm Gonna Do

I'm not a fan of Halloween. Some people find that surprising, since for years we built a huge, scary fun house called "Scream in the Dark" which hundreds of teens attended.

The point of that was to illustrate the message that we can learn from our fears. Yes, it was scary, but there was nothing even slightly demonic in it. After scaring the kids "to death," they were given a short talk about what can be good about some fears, and how God can help us overcome the serious fears we face.

But I can't get enthused about all the spirit-ish aspects of what the holiday has increasingly become. If I could think of a really good way to celebrate All Saints Day on Nov 1, I'd do that. Does anybody have any ideas? The Methodist church here remembers those who have died in the past year, so at least that's something.

Anyway, this tree sure is frightened of something!

And since a lot of people are frightened of spiders, here's a picture for them.

Got a lot done today. Including... picking up a battery-powered pruning saw I had ordered. It is slicker 'n snot! I may have to blog about it.

Maybe I'll start featuring one Christian each year who has really influenced me. I understand that Roman Catholics have designated Saints. But Scripture says that all who believe are saints.

A Little Halloween Fun

  I'm not a big Halloween fan, but there is one place on the highway that does seriously significant decorations. Here are two of them. I'll show you the rest another day.

In other news: I edited in the morning and worked on the trailer all afternoon. I got a lot done, but nothing completed to show you. Big List has 65 items with 19 crossed off, leaving 46 to go in 55 days. Gotta keep plugging.

Halloween-ish

  This is the best I can do for Halloween. I missed a nice spooky shot of a bare tree with the moon the other night. I haven't been able to recreate it because it's too cloudy here.

At least the sky cooperated and provided the correct color palette.

I've been working on Dead Mule Swamp Singer- actually wrote some words. And messing around with some other book promo stuff. Kinda laid back. Tomorrow the weather is supposed to be nasty, and then get better. There is one more major house project in my future, thanks to that forecast. Stay tuned. I'm resting up!

Just because they were so stinkin' cute, I'm going back in the archives to bring you Steve at age four (1978), as... a little stinker!



That same year, Josh wanted to be Batman.



Yeah, we did costumes when the boys were in school, but as you know, I'm not a Halloween fan. Actually, Steve was terrified of people in costumes until he was three. He sort of played with a Frankenstein mask that year, and wanted a costume the next year.

This year, Om went to town as his alter ego, Omdalf. He should have taken off the glasses at least for the picture, but we didn't think of it!



In other news: laundry, grocery shopping, other shopping, did some outlining for Mistletoe. Somehow that took all day.

Smilin' In the Rain

 
Well, I'm not sure I was quite as happy as this wet spook, but the day turned out to be good in many ways.



The weather app said the rain would start in the evening, so I thought I'd get a little bit done on the trailer. A little bit is right! It started to rain right around noon, and I just barely got a tarp over the trailer before it began to pour.

Meanwhile, Nancy at the Shagway Arts Barn was looking for some extra help for the afternoon, so I decided I could get in a few of my volunteer hours (inside!).

Since it's supposed to pretty much rain all week, I'm thinking this will be one of the last fall color pictures, taken just before the rain.



And perhaps the most surprising color for October... blue. Morning glories in full glory, in the afternoon, in the rain.



And there you have my day, except for the accountability.

Worked on the trailer a tiny bit.
Got volunteer hours in at Shagway.
Thanks to a quiet afternoon with hardly anything to distract me, Dead Mule Swamp Druggist is now done through Chapter 50. Word count: 66,500 to date.

Spooky?

 


I'm not a big Halloween fan. If you are interested in my philosophy about it you can read "Evolving Feelings Concerning the Celebration of Halloween." But this isn't a philosophy blog.



So, I'm just posting some pictures of things that some people find spooky. I never used to be able to understand that at all. But at this point in my life, I've spent enough time with people who are not comfortable in the outdoors that I guess I can see where their feelings come from.
