"Housecleaning" and the Best of 2009

#1: The best of 2009
Most years I make an informal list of some of the "bests." It's pretty flaky. It always seems to have best books read, and best recipe finds, but the rest is helter-skelter, based on whether anything has actually been outstanding. But I decided to write it all down this year.

Best Recipe Finds
Chocolate Zucchini Bread
Turkish Barley Soup
Pumpkin Cranberry Muffins

Best Books Read
The Red Tent by Anita Dimant
Not Without My Daughter by Betty Mahmoody
Hidden Rainbow by Christmas Carol Kaufman
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows
Coming of Age in the Milky Way by Timothy Ferris

Best Accomplishments
500 more miles on the NCT
Finished Irene’s Afghan

Best Project Started
Moose in Boots (a children’s book)

Best Poem Read
the other guineahen died of a broken heart by e.e. cummings

Best Purchase
my new camera Canon Powershot SX10IS

#2: Monthly Contest
No one even entered the contest, although I know four people who were working on the puzzle. I guess I just made it too hard, and maybe the holidays were problematic, because even a partial answer would have been a winner! Anyone who is working on it, and would like the word list, or even a clue, just email me.

#3: Top Commenters
Tomorrow, I'll have the top commenters from December updated.

#4: A Poll
I'm hoping you will help me decide about something with this blog. I will be spending more time this year working on writing, as in writing for money (well, I can hope). I am losing another big web site client that wants to switch to a data-base driven site, and so I have to shift even more to writing. I have already shared a few things about the writing saga here, but I'm thinking of starting yet another blog, but one that I won't worry about updating except when there is something of interest going on with my writing. So, please take the poll, and leave any comments you wish.

#5: A Confession
I completely blew off the day and worked on a jigsaw puzzle that I got for Christmas a few years ago. It's huge, and I love them, but didn't think I should take the time. And I probably shouldn't have started it now...

Shark, whether you open a new blog or add your writing to this one, I'll read it because I very much like your writing.

Hey, so you tell us about the recipes but are you going to post them.

Gosh, I did work on the puzzle and got quite a few of the answers but I don't think I kept them, after all that. I was pleased that I did learn something, though. Some I did know - like Basil Rathbone - Ithaca - serotonin and others...but I had to look up Ozymandias and cetacean. Oh, yes, thin mints I got because I've eaten at least fifty boxes in my life...and I think Mobasa and Malindi are Kenyan cities.

Listen, you deserve to work a puzzle sometime if that gives you pleasure!!

well-done!

Spending a day to do a jigsaw???? I NEVER... (just kidding) Some times one must just do what is the right thing for the day.

I'll check out some of your books. Or would you want to do a book swap? I send you a few and you send me some? I read the Red Tent a few years ago and LOVED it too. I have a ton of good books that are just sitting taking up space and could be shared.

What a great idea with your lists. As for the crossword puzzle, some times you just need to sit and do something for yourself and forget the rest of the world.

On the blog issue, ultimately it is your blog and you need to do what you think is right for YOU. Either way I'll keep dropping by

i write sponsored posts, Sharkbytes, I actually enjoy writing some of my sponsored posts since I get to discover some places. these days though, have been too busy that can not keep up with writing sponsored posts, but i still do sometimes when i have that free time.

I sent my contest entry to you, so even though it got waylaid somewhere along the line, you have one attempted entrant.

The camera I've been considering buying is the slightly newer version to yours. I've read that your version is the better one, but I can't find it as inexpensive as the newer one.

I love your list of "best things". It's a great way to look back at all the accomplishments that some time we might miss.

Voted on your poll!

Carmen- Well, Since the recipes came right out of books that are still in print, I'm not sure about posting them on a blog. Are recipes copyrighted? Hmmm- serotonin is going to be a problem. You are on the right track with Mombasa and Malinidi, but get more specific than just cities.

Thanks, wenn

Julia, ummm, errr. I don't actually loan books. I was thinking swapping drafts of our children's books that we are working on.

Ann- Thanks for the encouragement. The pole is taking a strong list in one direction, which gives me things to consider.

Vanilla- You would like this one... it's very colorful

betchai- Well, I'm not actually talking about sponsored posts, but whatever direction the writing goes, I need some accountability that you, my blogger friends, can provide.

Ratty- Rats! I wonder how it got lost. I have your email in my approved list. Aha! You used a different email. It is in my junk folder, and postmarked correctly. OK... will announce tomorrow. I WILL get my act together. A few events in my life have got me kinda down.

Icy- It was fun writing them down. I haven't actually recorded them for a few years.
