Is guilt a valid motivator? Currently not popular as a theme. However, sometimes I think it works pretty well. It may be officially spring, but if I keep going, Loretta may be able to wear this before the weather catches up with the calendar. She's coming tomorrow to check the sleeve length.



Then just a little more knitting, some sewing of seams and tucking in of ends!

Which Way DId He Go?

 
This hasn't been a good winter for tracks. A few years ago I brought you lots and lots of them, but the conditions were different. However, I have a few today.

First is a really large deer print in the mud. It doesn't have to be a buck when you see those rear toes, but it does have to be a large/heavy deer. I'm thinking this was probably a buck. Look at the size! My feet are small for a human, but still. Wowzers!



I just thought this was funny. Which way did he go? Actually I just pictured one set of tracks going in each direction, but the fact that they are together makes it look like the squirrel jumped straight up and did a 180!



Remember, the squirrel hops, and puts back feet (big ones) in front of the smaller front feet. What kind of squirrel? No way to be sure just from the tracks, but they are pretty big, so I'm guessing fox squirrel. Here's a nice shot that shows more detail of the pads and nails.

Curious by the Manistee

 
I've been curious every time I've driven over the bridge where the Manistee River flows into Manistee Lake. There is what appears to be an old railroad grade, leading off into the marshy area at the head of the lake.



Yesterday I stopped long enough to be able to read the sign.



It certainly looks like foot travel is not restricted, so one of these days I may just have to see how far in toward the lake that goes. The berm continues north along the river, on the other side of the road too. My RR atlas says that was the former Manistee and North Eastern line that ran as far as Northport in the Leelanau Peninsula. Fifteen miles at the far north end are now a non-motorized trail. Of course, I wonder how far one could follow it, starting here at its southern end.

Looking south, toward the lake, the river begins to break into braided passages. You can see part of the older section of Manistee, with a church steeple, across the way.
