A Baby and a Prediction

There's a meme going around Facebook with a picture of Einstein. It says something like "Get a job, and within 14 days you will come into some money." Yup. I like that one. I got extra work hours both yesterday and today. At the middle of the month that should produce a nice reward.

Meanwhile, I forgot I had gotten these pictures. Last week I stopped to take a picture of this beautiful tamarack swamp.

Can you spot the difference between the two photos?

I just got lucky. The bird flew right across the scene as I snapped a picture. I saw it go, and then managed to find where it landed.

Of all the photos I snapped while it sat in a tree, only one is in focus. It's a baby red-tail hawk. They don't develop the red tail till later. I think this one is pretty young. Younger than the one at What a Teenager!

Orange Mist and a New Skill

Even though you'll never convince me that getting up early is a good thing, sometimes it's really beautiful. Sunrise from my kitchen this morning. Sorry about the power lines, but they are there.

And, I got to learn something new at work. I've never worked in the book room before, because those are usually run at the beginning of the week, when I'm not there. But the machine was acting up, and they still had a run to finish. Lots to learn about it all, but basically all this huge machine does is staple and trim the edges of booklets. I think it was made about 1940. Quite a klunker.

Nevertheless, we do get to piles of finished product.

Reflecting on a Log

It was a beautiful day, but I didn't get to spend much of it outside. I did get a lot done, however, so that is good.

Just enjoy this interesting reflection. I like how the angle has created the impression that the reflection doesn't look exactly the opposite of the reality. I think there's a lesson in there.

Woolly Bear Hiking My Way

This woolly bear caterpillar was hiking right along the road, straight as an arrow. I picked him up, and he didn't curl up!

woolly bear

Every woolly bear I've seen this fall has a wide orange stripe. On this one, 7 of his 13 segments are orange. That says there will be a mild winter. Hey, it's as reliable as any other folk lore.

Even though he was making good time, I moved him out of the roadway. There would be no competition at all with a vehicle.

Changes, and First Update

I'm going to try to do a goal update on the first of each month. Not the whole list. That would be a complete bore, just items where I've made progress. Even though it's only been a week since I started, it is the first of November. So this will be a short report, but it proves I can remember my goals for a few days, at least.

But first, a sad example of how things just don't stay the same. Without maintenance, buildings fall apart. This old school building that I featured almost three years ago didn't survive last winter's snow. [I learned in 2019 that it was known as the Jones School.]

Here's what it looks like now.

That seemed an appropriate message to go with the goals, since the bulk of the report is on fitness stuff. Those goals won't be met at all if I don't get busy. Sure, we get older and can't do as much, but without maintenance anyone gets wimpy fast.

So, for those of you who seem to care about progress, here we go...
