Clear Springs Again

  This is becoming my "go-to" hike when I'm driving home from the Muskegon area. I had a vendor event this afternoon, and it was just after 5 pm when I reached Montague, which is where this nature preserve is.

Sometimes Carleton Creek is littered with pollen or catkins because it's very slow-moving. But today, the pond was quite lovely.

I was interested to see what flowers were in bloom. The Canada mayflower, Maianthemum canadense, is opening up everywhere.

And this preserve has a lot of maple-leaf viburnum, Viburnum acerifolium. Very common, but an attractive native shrub. These buds are not quite open all the way yet, but you can sure see why it is called "maple-leaf."

My personal favorite of the day is wild or false sarsaparilla, Aralia nudicaulis. Although this can be a substitute for the flavoring, it's not the primary source, which comes from a different plant.

The flowers are just opening. They are "fireworks" balls of blossoms beneath the leaves.

And finally, one more reflection in Carelton Creek. The late afternoon light was good for reflections. It was cool and calm in the nature preserve. Even though it's pretty close to the freeway, it feels quiet and peaceful. I was really tired when I started to walk, but felt rejeuvenated when I finished. I think I walked about 3 miles.

The vendor event went pretty well. I did about average. Can't complain about that!

It turned into a truly gorgeous day, and I was wondering if I could talk myself into going for a walk when I got home from the vendor event, because I'd been up since 4 am, and knew I'd probably just want to crash.

Then I remembered there is a lovely little nature preserve just off the interstate on my way home. It's at Fruitvale Road, north of Muskegon. I've been there a couple of times before, and thought I remembered the vegetation as being a lot more weedy. Maybe they've been doing some work to clear non-native plants. It's a nice shady place to walk on a hot day. I walked for an hour and did almost all the trails. The one drawback is that it's near US 31, so you really can't get away from the traffic noise anywhere.

I walked almost all the trails today, including two I haven't done before (this is my third visit). This is a big old beech tree on the Rim Trail.


The Canada Mayflower, Maianthemum canadense, is starting to bloom.



There were actually a number of large trees in the property. This is a really big red maple.


Carleton Creek is in the center of the preserve, and there used to be a fish hatchery there. A small dam keeps one portion of the creek ponded up a bit. It's been a cool, shady, dark green space every time I've been there.



Here's another picture of Gaywings, looking very perky. Those two toothed leaves in front belong to something else, however.



The vendor event went pretty well. Didn't sell a lot, but didn't lose money. Here are a couple of free pictures from the school yard.

The magnolia tree was just about done blooming, but a couple of blossoms were still intact.



And although I'm not a huge fan of ornamental crabapples, I do like these dark ones.



Now, I'm clean and fed and plan to relax for the evening.

Clear Springs- New Find

 
I had work assignments that kept me busy till after 6:30, but I had seen an entrance to the Clear Springs Nature Preserve on Wednesday, and wanted to check it out.



There was a map posted of the trails, but no way to figure out how long any of them might be. I took a chance on the longest, and ended up walking about two miles round trip back to the car.



Along the pond there was certain evidence of beaver activity, although I didn't see any lodges or natural dams.

There are two ponds and an old fish hatchery area. Today there was a lot of pollen floating on the water. It wasn't too attractive, but the reflections were nice.



The maple-leaved viburnum is in full bloom.



And finally, if one of you is missing your pet anteater, I know where it is.
