Zucchini Chaffles

I've been trying to cut down on the carbs for quite a while now. But I love my carbs. I have found a few good substitutes. This is one of them- zucchini chaffles. I made a batch this morning, which is 6 chaffles. That will be 6 breakfasts for me.

Why am I doing this? I have my Granny's body type. This is the grandmother who competed with her brothers in goat cart races, played tennis in bloomers around 1900, rowed boats... Here she is on a horse when she was young and slim.

young woman on a horse in 1900

She climbed Mt. Marcy (highest point in NY state) in 1904.
woman on Mt Marcy 1904

But here's the thing. She stopped being active before I have any memories of her and became "just another" stout old lady (as to her body shape). Her health took a serious downturn when she was 76. I'm determined to fight off the stoutness. I don't like how I look that way, and more importantly, I don't like how I feel. I'm 78, so I'm already two years up on the loss of health. I weigh what I did in college, although gravity has distributed it a bit differently.

Fun fact- she was still vain enough to lace herself into a corset to try to hold the flab at bay. I remember being allowed to help with all the hooks and strings when I was a small girl. I thought that was fun. But I sure can't imagine wearing one of those contraptions!

My solution? Eat chaffles and salad and rabbit food. Cut down on sugar (I usually crave salt, not sugar anyway).

I'm in a dead heat obsession mode with the maps. Still 11 days of maps to go, but I can't make myself work on other important things until I have these done. Back at it now!

Scouting Out the Dental Landscape

Today I traded a lot of money for the first step in getting that molar replaced. I decided I did not want to live without it. Not having it put a big dent in the places I could chew.

First off, they took a new x-ray, and where I've pointed the yellow arrow shows where the bone regrew after the extraction and procedure to help the bone grow. They were very happy.
dental CT scan

Basically, they drill a hole in the bone and screw in a post. There are animated videos on youtube if you just want the basics, but I found one of the whole, for real, process. Considering how invasive this is, I feel pretty good.

The post has a cover on it to protect it until this part of the whole project heals up- maybe another two months. Then my regular dentist will put a tooth on the post.

The funniest part? They screw the post in with a little ratchet set just like a mechanic working on your car!

I've circled the little dark round thing behind the two well-filled teeth. That's the cover. It will also serve to keep the gum from growing all around the post while the bone heals. So this is called the implant, and the fake tooth is called a crown when they do that.
teeth in a mouth

The scouting? Buddy Bill may have an implant done and this way he can hear my advance scouting report before he has to commit.

I left home early enough to get in a hike on the way to the dentist. I'll show you that and report the miles tomorrow.

My brain is a little foggy, so I haven't tried to do anything this afternoon that took a lot of mental power, but I sort of puttered at a project. The jaw and tooth area isn't very sore at all. This dental surgeon is very good- same one as last time. I did make some cream of mushroom soup for dinner, and had a little ice cream. I'm supposed to skip hard crunchy things for a while.

How Did Things Go at the Dentist?

Since I am 100% self pay for dental needs I try to avoid going unless I need to. Here's what precipitated this whole crisis. For starters, despite having spent an inordinate number of hours of my life in dental chairs, I have had exactly one dentist that I liked. That was Dr. Rose in Ludington. I know that many of you local people also remember him. He did careful, gentle, and excellent work on my crappy teeth. He used to shake his head and say, "You were last in line when they handed out teeth."

And then, I did not help the situation one bit. In 5th grade, and I had just gotten my permanent front teeth, I managed to break them both off, snaggletooth style, on the gym floor. That was the beginning of a long horror story. Note: just scroll down if you don't want to read this whole long history.

This was dentistry in the 1950s. The teeth were not dead, but the nerves were exposed. Think pain. My mother was out of town for the first time in my life, and my dad was not willing to make choices until she got home, so I had to just endure that. Then, the dentist burned out the live nerves. (That was fun...) Then they ground down the stubs and put on caps.

Those were never satisfactory. I lost one or two every year. Of course, every time I was without a tooth or teeth I was teased at school. I swallowed one! Sometimes, when one came off I could retrieve it so the same cap could be glued back on. Usually not.

Then in junior high, it was determined I needed braces. For starters, my mouth was too small for the normal number of teeth. So they pulled four- one in each quadrant- so there would be room. I had an extreme overbite. So I had braces for three years.

In high school, the dentist suggested they do something "new." They would grind down the remaining stubs of my front teeth and screw a post into the old roots. Then a plastic tooth could be screwed onto the post. This would keep them in my mouth. So that was done.

Next I'm headed off to college. Yeah! With teeth that stay in my head. Yeah! Well, when I was a sophomore, I started having major mouth pain. Turns out there was in infection from that original injury that had been hiding for 9 years. It had spread to most of my upper jaw. So... 8 more teeth were pulled and put on a partial plate. That's how long I've had false teeth, since 1966.

Now, we'll back up to third grade. I swear my class was part of a Crest Test. We all got toothbrushes and toothpaste at school, and we had to line up and brush after lunch every day. And I brushed at home. However, my teeth were just riddled with decay. You'd think I never met a toothbrush. I think I was on the team that didn't get Crest.

Along around 1980, that first partial plate broke, and Dr. Rose made me my second plate. That one fit the best!

Then, my head decided to grow two wisdom teeth. No room for those babies. At least I only had them on one side of my head. One came out easily. I got sent to an oral surgeon for the other one. It was a mess, and they had to cut it out. I got a dry socket, ouch, ouch, ouch.

My second partial plate broke right after Dr. Rose sold his practice. So, yet another dentist made my third plate. But remember the bad teeth? They had to do quite a bit of work and put two gold crowns on back teeth on top to make things stable enough to hold the plate. I've never been very happy with the way this plate fits, but, o well...

Now we get to what happened this week. One of the fixes Dr. Rose did long ago on several of my molars was to more or less rebuild the tooth when there was really nothing left that could be fixed with a standard filling. He put a tight metal band around the tooth and packed it with something that created a "new" tooth. It was presented as fact that these would not last the rest of my life, but they would work for a while. Well, I don't know exactly when these were done, but I think they've lasted 25-30 years. One of these came apart this week. It left parts of the tooth looking like a series of arches at Pictured Rocks.

I was hoping a crown would fix it. Nope. The decay was too far down below the bone line. So that tooth had to come out and the one next to it will have to have a crown before it gets as bad as this one was.

So yesterday, I was off to Muskegon for the extraction. Now things get amazing. As mentioned, I've avoided dentists in recent years. First new technology surprise. They had me step up to a pedestal in the floor and bite down on a piece of plastic. That is just to keep you from moving. Then a couple of curved bars slowly whirl around your head. The result is a 3-D Xray!
dental x-ray

There are spots on the screen they can "grab" with a finger and rotate the image, so they can really see what's happening. Result- yes, the tooth was infected. And almost more problematic, the bone had degenerated. They said this isn't really unusual, but it had to be dealt with.

Next surprise- they help the bone regenerate. They took some of my blood (more on that in a minute), and mix growth factors from that with some kind of matrix. Then when the tooth is out they pack that in the hole, layer it with collegen and sew up the top. This helps your jaw grow new bone.

Now for the blood draw. These are nearly always horrible. I have small veins that apparently roll. It often takes 3-5 attempts to get blood from me. So the assistant says, "Do you have a good vein for me?" I said, "Nope." She says, all perky, "Perfect!"

I chose an arm and she ties on the tourniquet. She asked if I was ready. Well, yeah... what else am I going to say except "yes." I am here to tell you that I never even felt the needle go in and she got it on the first try. I'm praising her abilities, and she's trying not to smirk. But she's good, and she knows it. NO bruise today and you can't even see the prick.

Now for the part of the 3-D X-ray that I find fascinating. The computer prepares a rendering of the patient's mouth area that is nothing short of amazing. Look at this!
3d dental xray

I have to say that I think this oral surgeon was good. The tooth broke (as my dentist suspected it would) into three parts and he had to work to get them out. I chose local anaesthetic, so I knew what was going on. The assistant held my jaw to help him get leverage, and she was strong and firm but not rough.

One of the best things, and maybe this is standard now, but it was new to me. Instead of constantly telling you to open wider (which is very hard for me because my mouth is so small) they have a rounded triangle of hard rubber which they fit into the corner of your mouth and you can bite down on. Since the natural desire is to want to close and clamp your mouth, this is great. You bite down, but your mouth is still open wide.

I forgot to look at the clock when I was finished, but I think this all took a fair amount of time. I only stopped at the pharmacy on the way home for antibiotics and a special mouth rinse, but didn't get home until 4:30. It's an hour drive from where the extraction was done.

That's when I discovered my computer would not boot up. Too late to get to my computer place before they closed until Monday. I knew things were going bad, and had stopped to talk with them last week.

Anyway... there has been only a minor amount of pain with this extraction. I haven't even taken any pain meds. That's another bit of evidence that this guy was good.

Today, I've been working on the computer. Got it to boot up, and I'm running some tests and repairs I know how to do, but I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a new one next week.

I've read a bit, took a walk, watched a movie, and tried to take it easy. I'm blogging on the old computer which could die any unexpected hot second, but it seems to have survived long enough for yet another blog post.

Lincoln River in Winter

Unless things take a turn for the worse, today was my last doctor's appointment of this adventure.

I stopped at the Lincoln River (point 4 on the map in the link below) to snap a couple of winter pictures. I like this one best.
Lincoln River

After the doctor, I got groceries, and also bought a new mailbox.

This is the view eastward, upstream. Legally, this part, above this bridge, is not considered navigable. That means that the public is not supposed to poke around there in a kayak for example.
Lincoln River

I went to bell choir practice later in the afternoon. That's really the limit for my eyes today. They are still very light sensitive. But I'm convinced things are getting better.

My goals for tomorrow are to jerry-rig the new mailbox so they will deliver the mail, and to make yogurt. Those sound moderately reasonable to me.

About Done with All This?

These are all the different medications I've been on over the past 4 weeks. I know for a fact that I've never had to take this many meds in my entire life. All but two are precription. I'm done with all but one eyedrop and the general pain management.

Today I cut down the OTC painkillers a litte bit more. Hopefully, I can cut out even a little bit more tomorrow or the next day.
pills

I did manage to shower and wash and change my bedding. That's about all I accomplished. But I think the neuralgia is really on the run. It is pretty weird to have the bones in a quarter of your face itching, though. There is nothing you can to do scratch that!

Nothing is Something?

Well, today I did nothing again. Really pretty much nothing. I was hoping I'd feel well enough to go out to the NCT hike and chili feed at Big M. I knew I couldn't hike, but thought I might be able to be there for the meal and to visit. They had a great turnout. My buddy Bill was there and he sent me this picture.
hiking in snow

But I woke up with no energy at all again. Disappointing, but I knew I couldn't do it. Also, very little tastes good yet anyway.

However, I think my body is focusing all of its resources on the nerve healing. I'm down to nearly minimal non-prescription painkillers, and all of the places that have been hurting so badly now itch- not like a rash, but like when a wound is getting better. That's annoying, but I'm pretty sure it's a sign of healing. I'm calling that my big success of the day.

My goal tomorrow is going to be to clean up myself and change the bed. I'm trying not to feel guilty for doing nothing again, but it's really too much effort to try.

I'll take a faster ending to pain... I suspect that will be good motivation. Meanwhile, I have a good audiobook.

A Better View?

Sorry about no blog post last night. My eye hurt so bad I just couldn't function. Got an eye doctor appt. this morning. Two doctors looked at it, and the eye is fine. Really fine. What I have now is post-shingles neuralgia. This could last a while, but hopefully not more than a couple of weeks. The point is... I can use my eyes as much as I'm comfortable with. I'm not doing any damage. I just need to wait for the nerves to heal.

I drove through the beach afterwards and got much nicer pictures than last week.

And some open water looking more to the north.

I actually had a fair amount of energy today (compared to the past 3+ weeks). Maybe tomorrow I'll both have energy and my eye will be less light-sensitive. Of course they had to dilate it today.

But I'm very encouraged.

Fishies!

The eye doctor's office has a very nice aquarium with five fairly large fish. I know nothing about fish except that these are pretty and the aquarium was very clean.
tropical fish

I did quite a lot today. Two doctor appointments, got gas, got groceries. Then I rested and went to bell choir practice. It was tiring, but I did OK.

This picture also has two fish. There is a black one on the bottom that kind of folds up its fins and sits in the rocks.
tropical fish

OF course, you know I like the blue one.

I need to stay awake for another 45 minutes to take pills, but I might fudge on that a bit. I don't think I can sit up much longer. But today was a good day. We'll see what tomorrow brings. I won't be sorry if it's a little better, but I guess I'm getting used to the up-down nature of this recovery.

Not a Smooth Line

This recovery is not progressing as a smooth upward line. Today I was able to do things for about two hours and then it was back to bed with an icepack on my head.

This is the old landfill. I sort of like the bleak look of the hill. At one time the city was talking about making this into a park, but nothing ever happened with that.

Tomorrow I have two doctor appointments.

I Walked Outside!

I managed to get in four rounds of activity today of more than an hour each. One of those included an attempt to take a walk outside. It was beautiful!

Well, I didn't get very far. Maybe a couple of hundred feet before I was whipped and had to turn around. Baby steps.
snowshoe tracks

We got something between 20 and 25 inches of snow here this week. This is the pile that Doug pushed up at the end of the driveway with his plow.

I thought I'd bring in the mail from the last few days but discovered that the road plow has hit the post. I dug around until I was too tired, but I haven't even found where the box got knocked to yet. What fun.

No ice packs at all last night! The rash is almost gone. I did a little computer work today. I puttered around with various other tasks as I said. I walked 15 minutes inside. I ate a salad for dinner instead of something soft. My motivation is now ahead of my energy. But, my eye is very sore. I don't dare strain it too much. Overall, I'm encouraged.

More Up than Down?

First of all, last night was only a two-ice-pack night instead of the six-plus of recent nights to keep the fiery rash from driving me completely insane. No weird dreams.

And I think I may have spent more time up than lying down today. Went to the library and came home via Johnson Rd. Also a paved, plowed road. I think the schools were open today. One day this week.

I love the heavy snow on these old maple trees.

I'm starting to be a tiny bit hungry again. Sugar and salt are still really not appealing though. I made a tuna-noodle casserole and didn't use any salt beyond what was in the ingredients. Cheese on top. It hit the spot! Usually not a favorite of mine, but it was perfect. I have enough for a couple more meals.

Did some little bits of work. My head hurts less and less all the time. The eye is intermittently blurry, but it's OK. The rash is running from devil prednisone! Maybe I'm really on the mend?

The View? at the Beach

The visibility was still bad this morning, but I made it out and to the doctor safely. Afterwards I drove through the beach to get a nice picture to share with you. Ha! The lighthouse is out there somewhere.
beach with snow and no visibility.

The doctor says my eye is looking good and that I'm actually recovering quite normally. She said I have to expect the weakness and headache for at least another week. Hoo boy.

The rash was horrible last night. One more doctor appt tomorrow, and hopefully if the rash is still bad I can get some prednisone for that. Prednisone kicks rashes for me really well, but it's a prescription med.

I am highly encouraged that even though this isn't over that I'm progressing normally. Today took quite a bit of stamina with getting out and doctor and store afterwards. I also did the dishes because the fruit flies were taking over the kitchen.

Here's to a night with less itching.

Same Old

The weather is still doing the same things it's been good at for the last couple of days. Got one kind of interesting shot of goldenrod out the bathroom window.

Ditto for me. I had no energy at all again today. Dragged myself to the store to get some more pills to try to deal with the hives. I didn't sleep well at all from the itching.

Doctor in morning, assuming I can get out, but probably OK. I need some better answers.

Here is the soup I made yesterday. It's chock full of vegetables, but it's not very good. It's not awful, but I've made lots better. Things still don't taste right, so there is that too.

Sorry, I don't have much of anything interesting to share. Whatever this is has to let go soon, right?

Chilly Wonderland

The temperature here was 3 degrees this morning. Some of you registered even colder! I had to cancel my doctor's appt. There was enough new snow I couldn't get out of the driveway.

Doug came over after lunch and plowed me out. Cathy came too and we had a little visit. This was the first day I've been able to sit up for longer than 20 minutes. And, I can see!

However, last night, my body decided that it was going to be allergic to something, so I have hives from head to toe and we've added full-body itching to the fun. It's better this evening which is good because I don't tolerate itching well at all, and can't take much Benedryl.

I got cleaned up and went to the store. Schools are already cancelled for tomorrow.

I think I'll try to do a little work on the computer tomorrow. I'm getting behind on things I'm supposed to be doing for clients.

But now, I'm going to lie down and hopefully continue to heal. Dr. appt. rescheduled for Wednesday.

Today was sort of a day in "the wood between the worlds." I could not see well enough to do anything, and I also didn't have the energy. I seem to be a bit better this eveing. Everyone just says I have to be patient.

That desk I started sorting is stuffed full of old greeting cards and letters. I can't see enough to actually sort yet, but you may see a few in the future. It's nice to see reminders of the people who have cared for us through the years.

Well, I woke up this morning expecting to be a little better, but instead I was weak and shakey and my vision was worse. Sigh.

Eye doctor corfirms the shingles are pretty much gone, but now have gneral eye infection. Steriod drops.

I managed to finish the load of laundry and to make the soup. I was thinking it would be cream of celery, but it also has onion and chicken. It is GOOD. Since I had to get the next prescription on the way home, I also got some yummy dark berries. I'm still off my feed. But they also taste good.

Help! She's Going to Eat Me!

The doctor report was good this morning. They eye looks significantly better, but I have to continue with the drops and ointment for at least two more days.

I managed to stay upright for quite a few hours and did some brainless tasks (refuting my statement that I did bring my brain home?).

I was hungry for the first time in days and managed to eat a small salad for dinner.

I can't do much that requires visual acuity until I stop needing the ointment, but the doctor was very encouraged, and the swelling is almost gone. Please be patient if I owe you a better response than a "like" - or remind me in a couple of days that you are waiting for something from me if necessary. But I seriously can't do much reading/writing until then.

Off to take my meds and like down.

However, I do have shingles, and they are in my one good eye. So that is the current concern. Monica has been the bestest ever. She took me to the ER yesterday and I was not very functional. She didn't have to carry me, but wow.

I now have many meds.

Went to eye docotr today and have more meds and another appointment for tomroow. But something managed to kick the severe pain.

AHa! I can tell you what's wrong with me. See that little bright spot in the middle? Someone is lying down on the job. This is what it's supposed to look like.

Seriously, it's like a miracle how much better I felt this morning. And I'm keeping small ampunts of food down. Thanks for the many prayers and everything. My phone has hardly stoppoed dinging or ringing all day so if you could manage to wait a few days before needing me for anything it would be great I have ointment I need to keep in my eye and I can hardly see through the goop.
