White Pelicans

Our day has been non-stop since 8:30 this morning, and tomorrow we drive home. So, I'm just going to show you a couple of pictures of the white pelicans and go to sleep. These are one of my favorite birds. They are huge, with a 9-foot wingspan. They summer in North Dakota, but apparently winter in Alabama.

Made me think of the Dixon Lanier Merritt poem (often attributed [wrongly] to Ogden Nash) about the Pelican. Which would also explain why I often refer to those birds as peckicans. If you know the poem, you know why.

Have a safe trip home.

I like when they dive into the water, head first! Such odd characters!

They are the state bird of Louisiana and I always love to see them soaring and diving for fish.
