Today we walked from Big Lake back to the Sturgeon River. Big Lake is a really special place in terms of botany. We spent a few minutes there today while the guys humored my obsession with plants. However, it is apparently too early to see much of anything that I'd seen there before. I really thought I'd find some things that I know grow there. But the lake is pretty anyway.
The walking was easy and mostly dry. We ate lunch sitting on benches on the bridge over Plumbago Creek. Talk about luxury. If we look chilly, we were. It was supposed to be sunny all day. Instead it was quite chilly with misty rain off and on. The good news was that the cool wind kept the mosquitoes at bay. It was an easy trade-off to be a little cool but not have to wear the headnets.
This section of trail is all new to me. When I last hiked here in 2005 it was mostly road walk. We thought this was a beautiful and pleasant walk.
Before long, we arrived back at the Sturgeon River. Here it is continuous rapids and small waterfalls.
This is just below Canyon Falls, which I last showed you in November of 2022.

The wildlife of the day was dragonfly nymph cases.
The evening was filled with a special event. I'm going to blog about it tomorrow after I get home. Then Saturday, I'll show you a whole bunch of plants and flowers from the last few days. Then... Sunday... the FINAL miles.

A good day all around. That dragonfly nymph case is rather interesting.
Charlee: "Yikes! What are those things? They look like aliens!"
Chaplin: "We cats welcome our new insect overlords, especially if they flit around a lot so we can chase them."
Ann- the dragonfly nymphs are a little scary!
Charlee- they do... and maybe kitties would like to chomp them, and Chaplin can chase them all over after they bust out with their pretty shiny wings.
