Birds' Nests and Soup

bird nest

No, not birds' nest soup, birds' nests AND soup! I have one more really neat thing to show you from while Loretta was here, but I wanted to go back outside for today's post. Maggie and I are still doing road walks, although we are supposed to get some decent snow tomorrow. So today, I hunted for nests revealed when the leaves fell. I found two.

I don't know what birds made these. I only know a few kinds. I have a field guide to nests and eggs on my Amazon wish list, but it will have to wait!

turkey soup stock

Meanwhile, on the home front, did I mention that we did a turkey while Loretta was here? So there was this carcass, very much in need of cleaning and turning into soup. I got step one done... to boil it down. Maybe tomorrow I'll have the finished soup made.

See That's Some Baby for an eagle nest
See Winter Stillness for another unidentified nest

I have had bird's nest soup in Chinatown - very pricy - but it tasted good. I think the nests are imported from Thailand or Indonesia and are made from saliva of the male swiftlet.

I love turkey soup - I usually get at least a 20 pound turkey when I cook one so there are plenty of left overs.

You have green in the background and blue sky. I am so envious, all I can see if white.

Home made soup and a snowstorm. Perfect combination. Although one could probably do without the snow :)

That will be a great soup base, and we have about 4 inches of snow already..Still coming very steadily!

I like watching for all of the nests in the trees. I'm trying to tell the difference between bird's nests and squirrel's nests right now. I've gotten pretty good at it, but I'm still never 100% sure. I've seen both building them, and I've seen both going into them. Nests are one of the good parts of winter.

Vanilla and rainfield- I wondered if I would "catch" some readers with my attempt at a little joke there.

Carmen- I have never even tasted bird's nest soup. Bird's carcass soup... very often!

wenn- try it, it's easy! I'll be posting my "recipe" on Shared Reviews next month.

Jen- It's white now! And the green is pine trees- they are there all year.

Ann- No, no! I need the snow. Went skiing twice today.

Icy- You have more than we do. I'm right where there isn't as much coming down.

Ratty- Yes, I don't see many nests in summer. Most are too high in trees. Well, except the wren that nested on the porch!

Ivy- the soup is done!
