Return to Lick Brook Falls

I made it to Elaine's tonight. We took a short hike in the evening, because it's going to continue to be pretty hot during the days. Lick Brook Falls, (along the Finger Lakes and North Country Trails) see link below for when I was there on the big hike, is only about a mile from where she lives, but she'd never been there. It's in a nature preserve, but it kind of a "secret."

To get there you have to cross a railroad bridge. This is probably illegal, but everyone does it, because there is no other bridge over the creek.

Elaine had never been there, and she loves waterfalls. But it was a bit disappointing because... it's July... not very much water.

But, there were a few interesting trickles.

Someone else thought the railroad bridge was interesting too. Yup, it's another blue racer!

You know I was looking at the plants. This isn't anything really special, but I don't see it very often, so I had to look it up to remind myself. It's Ditch Stonecrop, Penthorum sedoides.

And that's enough for today! We have some adventures planned for tomorrow, but I need a long nap first!

Miles hiked so far in 2024: 266.3. NCT miles hiked 106.2.

Route 96 to Lick Brook Falls and back and a little more. Near Ithaca, NY. 1.8 miles

Abby Sends Me Off

This morning, I said goodbye to Irene and Abby. Abby seemed sad to see me go.

I took the slow route to my next stop because I love driving over the hills of home. I was going to name the post that, but I've used that title before, and it turned out that only one of my pictures is much good anyway. But the geography Western NY sure calls to me.

I'll let you play a guessing game again... where am I? With someone who also like word games. We played Scrabble. We tied at 276 points each. I expcted to get clobbered because I don't play Scrabble much, and am not adept at the strategy.

Then we played Upwords. I REALLY expected to get beat on this one. I was getting walloped, but then made a great play, and went out when the other person still had tiles! So, I won again. Don't get too excited. We are both good at word games.

Then we went for a little walk. This is white snakeroot, formerly Eupatorium rugosum, now Ageratina altissima. Whatever you call it, it's very toxic to farm animals like sheep, goats and horses. If cows eat it, and people drink the milk or eat the meat they can get "milk fever," which can be fatal.

Perhaps the best find of our little walk was a green heron on the marsh.

The focus isn't quite as good on this one, but we like how it's cleaning its foot.

Tomorrow, I'll tell you where I am. Think games and birds. The answer is....

Rest Day

Today was a rest day for me. Irene and I hung around her house all morning, then went and did errands in the afternoon. Here's Irene's current dog, Abby. She's huge and fuzzy and a really nice dog.

Akita

One of the errands was to get bird feed. Gotta keep those feathered friends happy, especially since the cold is supposed to hit here on Wednesday.

The last errand of the day was to get pizza. Loaded pizza. Oh yes!

A little writing occurred. Only 1100 words so far, but I'm going to try for more before sleep.
