I Want S'more


Back in the middle of last week, Carol from the UK asked what a s'more is. That's one of the interesting things about blogging; it's really an international forum. S'mores are such a quintessential part of American summers that I never even considered that others might not recognize the name. In the interests of international friendship, I hereby present the s'more.

There are three ingredients: Graham crackers, marshmallows, Hershey's plain milk chocolate bars.

roasting marshmallow

You begin by roasting the marshmallows. Burned or browned... whatever suits your style. Cautious folks use one per s'more. Those with fewer inhibitions go for two. It's a challenge to eat, but they are willing to step up to the task.

Hershey bar

You have to have plain Hershey's chocolate bars. I don't know why. You just do.

s'more

Place half a chocolate bar on a graham cracker square. Place a hot marshmallow on top of that and top with another cracker square. Squish. If you can wait a minute the chocolate will soften too. Most people proceed directly to: Eat.

The next question is going to be "What are graham crackers?" My daughter lives in Washington state and she buys graham crackers here when she visits because they are not available there.

Excellent S'more explanation! Don't forget to use the descriptive adjective "yummy" at least once!

And for Grump, I grew up in WA state and I do know that graham crackers are a staple of their diet!

The strange thing for me is that as common as these are, I've never had one. My grandma used to send us cookies that have the same ingredients, so I've been close. And I've had plenty of roasted marshmallows, but never once had a s'more.

I can't eat 'em as they are wayyyy too sweet for me! I can do the marshmallow, but not the other stuff with it. I know, I'm a party pooper. :)

Lynne- hard to mess up that simple of a recipe! Better tell Gordy where to buy those crackers.

Ann- I actually haven't had one for quite a while, but it was an easy and popular idea for the work week.

Ratty- now that IS strange. You should go buy the ingredients and have some, just so you won't be un-American

Ivy- so the recipe made it to your part of the world ok.

Lin- interesting. I think the marshmallow are the overly sweet part, although I don't like milk chocolate nearly as much as dark.

(In my seven years in Seattle, I never had a problem finding graham crackers.)

vanilla- the ONLY reason? no hot dogs, ambiance? I think we need to find out which planet Gordy's family is on.
