Philadelphia Flower Show 2019 - Balconies

Another category at the Philadelphia Flower Show that is similar to Entryways is Balconies. The "instructions" state: Feed Your Soul. Create a visual delight for the eye through color texture form and fragrance.

These displays were also judged twice, but the awards were split. The first one took second on Wednesday and first on Friday. It was titled "Escape" and the intent states "Outside, my writing takes root and thrives. As I allow my thoughts to germinate, reality is distorted..."

Judges comments: "A fantasy that has become a reality." And "Elegant dreamscape for rainforest garden. Seeks more plant variety."

Please note the typewriter! Needless to say, I liked this one.

This one took first on Wednesday and second on Friday. The title is "Paint Outside the Lines." The intent is "En plein air feeds the artist's soul... This harmony of colors, variations of light, and the beauty of nature blend together to provide a constant source of inspiration."

Judges comments: "Inviting, entertaining and achievable." And "Remarkable presentation of a southern balcony for an artist."

Let me just say that the plant material in this one was outstanding. For example, it's really hard to make an Aeonium look this good. They are usually a leggy mess.

This one took third on Friday and fourth on Wednesday. It's entitled, "Good Book, Cuppa Tea," The intent is "...a basket of books... and a variety of homegrown teas... provide a spiritual retreat from the clamor of city life."

Judges comments: "Sensual, fragrant, and colorful." And "Very colorful garden with recycled containers. Overabundance of components."

This had a C.S. Lewis quote at the top, "You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me."

The last entry took fourth on Friday and third on Wednesday. Note that this was entered by a high school. A number of entries in the contests were done by students. This is "From Pot to Table." The intent is "We spent years among... cows... fields... crops... Now we live surrounded by pots full of herbs and vegetables. Life is groovy."

Judges comments: "Downsizing doesn't have to be dull." And "Admirable edible and ornamental plantings. Needs simplifications."

There is one more "living space" type of contest to bring you another day.

In other news: Today I wrote in the morning, and spent the afternoon working on the Books Alive! Ludington book vendor event which will be July 19. I'm in charge again this year.

Whoever put these together did a good job. Clever and attractive.
