Philadelphia Flower Show 2012- Small Themes

The parts of the show that are judged are what's known as a Standard Flower Show. These are a little bit difficult to explain, but this article What is a Standard Flower Show? does a pretty good job if you are interested.

Most shows of any size have miniature displays. This show had five categories (called classes, I think), all with the Hawaiian theme. The niches were about 8 inches wide and a foot high. I'll give you the information on each one as we go. Most of these are the winning entries. I'm not sure about one of them.

First, we have Lei. I should explain that plant material has to be used to create the display, but that doesn't necessarily mean flowers. Seeds, leaves, stalks, etc are all acceptable. There might also be more specific rules. However, this one had no additional requirements.

This class is "Honu: Green Sea Turtle." The rules state that no actual turtle parts may be used. This is the blue ribbon winner and the judges said "Amazing... into the rhythmic vortex."

This was the Challenge Class. The theme was "Surf's Up" and each display had to use at least three of the following items: aluminum wire, shells, sand, white cotton rope, and beach glass. Sometimes I couldn't understand the judges' decision, but this one was easily the nicest of the entries.

This is "Hula." Not much more for me to say about that. The judges said "You can hear ukuleles in this vivid interpretation of a hula."

Finally, we have "Tiki." I'm not sure if this is the winner or not. I liked most of the entries in this one. These niches were a little bit larger, and the class was only open to contestants who had never won a blue ribbon in the Arrangement Classes of the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Maybe one of the reasons I like this kind of display is that I think I could do some of these. The straight flower arranging sort of eludes me.

I think I like the first one the most. More leaves.

Hmmmm. It's interesting to learn about these contests and how they judge them. I agree, though, half of the time, I don't know why certain things win and others don't. I'm sure there are specific rules that have to be followed.

I like the Hula one--although I don't hear ukuleles when I look at it.

maybe I lack imagination but I didn't hear any ukuleles :) I like the one for "Surf's Up"

Ratty- I understand where you are coming from, but you have to view these miniatures are art, not botany!

Lin- Sometimes I agree with the judges that certain elements are out of balance or whatever, sometimes I just can't see it.

Ann- o well, I do like it when the judges say something positive.

Jean- I bet there are equivalents to the Standard Flower Show in the UK
