Devil Track and No Pincushion - Day 291

Today was foggy, foggy. And it did rain more in the afternoon. Wet is my new normal, right? It was pretty in a mysterious sort of way.

These high open areas usually give great views. Today they just felt lonely.

One of the highlights was walking along the Devil Track River, although you can't get many good views. The gorge is narrow and deep.

The trail goes a long way upstream to reach a place where a bridge can span it. Where the bed is wide, it doesn't look like much water. It's hard to judge the scale of this picture. That wall of loose stone is probably 50 feet high.

Where the walls begin to close in, that water gathers into something that looks less friendly, but beautiful.

The real highlight of the day should have been Pincushion Mountain. The trail does not go over the top, but there is a nice lookout where you can see it. In the flat light through the fog, the lookout space looks like a rock wall.

I had to climb the rock anyway, just because. Guess what I saw. Not Pincushion Mountain!

Today's trail treat was the sharp smell of balsam in the wet woods.

Today's trail trial was that Marie's car battery decided to die. She got it jumped while I hiked after lunch. She gets a new battery on Monday, and we can just use my car for shuttles until then. All is well.

The walk up to the Pincushion Overlook is highly popular. Despite the fog, I counted 30 hikers making the trek up there.

Miles today: 12.7. Total miles so far: 3440.7.
