Cayuta Creek - Day 153

It rained all afternoon, hard enough that I had to put the camera away. Fortunately, the best thing to see was in the morning. When I hiked this section previously, the Cayuta Creek Trail did not exist and was not part of the FLT. I believe this is now part of the Catharine Creek Wildlife Management Area.

The creek flows along the bottom of a narrow, 200-foot deep, steep-sided gully. At first, the water was barely flowing, and I thought it wasn't going to be very interesting. Cayuta Creek

But as the creek continued, it developed a little more character. Cayuta Creek

It never tumbled over waterfalls, but had nice little eddies. Cayuta Creek

Cayuta Creek is a tributary of the Susquehanna River, which drains much of lower New York into Chesapeake Bay. The Finger Lakes all drain north to the St. Lawrence, but if a creek flows south, it will end up in the Susquehanna.

This is an unnamed tributary of Cayuta Creek. It had more significant elevation change. This is a typical New York lazy creek with eroded and broken layers of shale forming step-like shelves for the water to flow down. shale waterfall
