Coal- Brought to You by an Oops - Day 93

See this pleasant valley? valley of strip mine

Nope, not so much, although this particular location has recovered to a large extent. This is a coal strip mine. The old topo maps show how much of the area was mined. The location above is right in the center of this map. All the mined places are in purple. strip mine map

So... we turned a corner that wasn't correct. We take responsibility for our error, but after recovering and looking at where we went wrong, we think a lot of people would make the same error. Anyway, we got to see a section of active strip mining. This rock face was being demolished searching for seams of coal. rock face

When coal is found, it is sorted and probably sent to power plants. There are still some coal-fired ones in the area. coal mining

With red faces, we admit to walking a long way out of our way. And then we had to walk all the way back.

There was one lovely bit of real trail around Caldwell Lake. But as you can see, we did not finish very early. Caldwell Lake Caldwell Lake

So we walked 21.3 miles, but only 16.7 of them count.

Miles today: 16.7. Total miles so far: 1193.2
