Out of the Wayne - Day 91

Ring Mill is at the northern end of the off-road trail in the Wayne National Forest. This is the fourth time I've been there. It's been an anchor point for the North Country Trail "forever." The National Forests were the first to get on board with the trail building, so forever isn't far wrong. It feels like an old friend. This is actually the home of the Ring family who were the millers. The mill is no longer standing. Ring Mill

Before we got there, we enjoyed this scenic view on Rinard Mill Road. Ohio scenic view

Our one misfortune was that both Bill and I missed this sign board for the turn back into the woods. This accounted for us walking an extra mile. trail sign board

This was awesome, though! At two places, we encounterd a 5-gallon bucket filled with bottles of water, and labeled for hikers to take whatever they needed, but to please pack out the empty bottles. bucket of water bottles

There were a few more lines of rocks breaking through the ground, and we decided to eat lunch by one of them. Kind of a goofy picture, but it was a fun place to eat. hikers sitting by rocks

We had one serious ford (garbage bags), and then a long walk beside a waterway to reach a bridge. Just because, we decided to see why the trail didn't just ford that one too. Um. No. It's the Little Muskingum River. This would be a swim. And the bridge we walked to was the one at Ring Mill. Little Muskingum River

A bit more about the Ring Mill house. When it was sold to the Forest Service, the building was stabilized and this lintel was added over the door as part of the renovation. It was built of sandstone blocks hauled to the site by ox teams. There is a picture of it on the interpretive sign with nice windows and a front porch- a very inviting place. Anyway, I've always liked it. Ring Mill lintel

So Bill and I still had 5.5 miles of roadwalk to do and it was 3:40. We hoofed it, and finished at 5:20. We walked an extra 0.3 mile to his car because a bridge repair had stopped him from quite reaching the correct location in the morning. So with the oops and the extra, we walked 17.9 miles, but only 16.6 count.

Miles today: 16.6. Total miles so far: 1159.9.

See Hocking Hills and Goodbye

How nice that someone put those buckets out there with water.
I can see why that sign might have been overlooked.
